At least two distinct populations of this species occur in Australia:Varanus storri storriis distributed in the eastern parts of Australia andVaranus storri ocreatusis restricted to the Kimberley region of Western Australia to the adjacent part of Northern Territory.
Small size up to 30 cm.
Dorsally reddish brown, with numerous dark scales, sometimes forming a reticulation, sometimes also present on the upper surface of limbs.
Lower surfaces white or cream.
