Varanus acanthurusis found over the tropical and subtropical parts of Western Australia, the Northern Territory, northwest Queensland and associated offshore islands.
Small to medium-sized monitor lizard: about 70 cm in total length.
Tail nearly round without dorsal crest, 1.3 to 2.3 times as long as snout-vent length.
Dark brown dorsally with yellowish ocelli on dorsum.
Head striped and tail banded with same colors.
Ventral surfaces white or creamy.
