Monitors' tail can present a smooth aspect or a conspicuous spiny surface (because of transformed scales oriented towards the end of tail).

presence: Tail with, dorsaly et laterally, sharp-pointed scales forming spiny rings along the entire length. Chose this state also if the keels of the caudal scales are very strong.
absence: Tail with a smooth surface. Chose this state if the caudal scales do not present a strongly keeled surface.
